New Facebook Terms Of Service

nerdology:

I know nobody reads TOS agreements.  I sure don’t.  I click “AGREE” knowing that if something is horribly wrong someone else (probably with OCD) will find it.  Glad to know I’m right… also un-glad (?) to know I’m being screwed.

The Consumerist is reporting that the new TOS on Facebook allows them to retain the rights to anything you upload to use for any purposes they deem fit, even after you close your account.  It used to be that closing your account would end their TOS, but the new agreement (as of February 4th) lets them hold onto your stuff indefinitely.

The following sections will survive any termination of your use of the Facebook Service

That’s the frightening bit taken directly from the TOS.  So be extra cautious with those photos you upload.  Facebook could right now be holding photos of future a presidential candidate in some compromising positions destroying his chances, and canceling the account does nothing to making those photos go away.

Facebook may have changed their TOS back, but I’m still pretty unhappy about their fraction-typing policy.

Facebook Hit By Hackers 5 Times In 7 Days

nerdology:

In the story that adds more fuel to my hating-facebook-applications fire the BBC reports that Facebook has been hit by five separate security problems in the last seven days.  Four of these problems come from malicious applications that target users and try and get personal information to sell.  One of the applications even spams itself to every friend you have once it’s installed.

The fifth problem is a new variant of the Koobface virus which first targeted members in December.  All in all it has not been a good week for Facebook’s security.  Mark Zuckerberg says even though this week was particularly bad on the exploited applications front, he will not be policing them:

“Our philosophy is that having an open system anyone can participate in is generally better.”

There you have it.  Don’t expect malicious applications to stop any time soon, and don’t ever, ever enter any information into Facebook you that you wouldn’t tell a complete stranger on the street.

The new Facebook provides definitive proof that Twitter and Tumblr had sex 40 weeks ago. And then Zuck stole the baby from the hospital.
